According to the allegations spread in the Iranian and Iraqi media, Iran wants to create an armed group called Kurdistan Hezbollah in Iraqi territory. The eponymous group of Shiite Kurds was founded in 1988 by Masoud Barzani's cousin Atham Barzani with the support of Iran and operated until 2004. After the dissolution of the group, Atham Barzani joined the KDP and was elected as a deputy. However, his close relations with Iran caused the anger of Massoud Barzani and he was banned from entering Erbil.
Allegedly, Atham is planning to reunite Iraqi Shiite Kurds (Feili) and form Kurdistan Hezbollah. According to official figures, 1.5 million people live in Iraq.
Although Iranian proxies are strong in other parts of Iraq, they have no power in the Kurdistan Autonomous Region (KAR), so they are trying to create sectarian divisions among the Kurds. Taking advantage of the presence of Shiite Kurds, Iran is forming a new front against the KM supported by Turkey, the United States, and Israel.
